Vice President Dick Cheney and aspiring Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama may not share a political philosophy, but they do share a family tree.

The vice president's wife, Lynne, said during an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday that her husband and Obama were eighth cousins, a fact she discovered while researching family ancestry for her new memoir.

“This is such an amazing American story that one ancestor ... could be responsible down the family lines for lives that have taken such different and varied paths as Dick’s and Barack Obama,” she said.

Ginny Justice, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Cheney, told MSNBC that Obama is a descendant of French Huguenot Mareen Duvall, whose son wed the granddaughter of the Englishman Richard Cheney in the 1600's.

Fox News on Wednesday also cited a report last month in the Chicago Sun-Times, which indicated Obama also had a distant genealogical connection to President Bush. The two are 11th cousins, according to the paper.

"Every time some new president gets installed -- elected to the United States presidency -- somebody does the whole lineage and, invariably, it leads back to the Queen of England," said Fox and Friends co-host Steve Doocy. "Everybody's always related to the Queen of England."

An Obama spokesman commented that "every family has a black sheep."

we all remember when darth cheney told sen. pat leahy (d-vt) to go fuck himself...ahhh, fuzzy senate memories...but john mccain has tried to one-up the dark lord by telling off a fellow republican on the senate floor. during the immigration bill debate, mccain said "fuck you! i know more about this than anyone else in the room" to sen. john cornyn (r-tx) during a heated exchange.

for those who were terribly afraid that the republican-Star Wars analogies were limited to darth, i mean, dick cheney, the LA Times is here to let us know that it's john mccain who's the real darth vader of the republican party. on that note, can i nominate denny hastert as jabba the hut?

an interweb rumor worth attention?

yeah, there have been tons of rumors over the past few years of the impending resignation of darth, excuse me, dick cheney. usually, someone quasi-sane as myself would disregard these interweb rumors as wishful thinking, be they proffered by dreaming liberals or some disillusioned condi-as-vp nutjobs. but this time, it's neither of these. it's the reserved speculation of the op-ed page of the Washington Post. that makes me pay a tiny, wee bit of attention:

"However beleaguered, Cheney will not resign over the president's refusal to take his advice. The only force that could drive him to that dramatic step would be that unshakable sense of loyalty to Bush, who desperately now needs a vice president in stable physical, emotional and political health. That is the equation you want to be watching."

it's also made the far-right bush apologists at Newsmax bring up the old condi switcheroo again. anyway, it's probably near impossible the the vp will step down, but with the president's approval rating at an all time low in some polls, a new vp may be just what the rove ordered.

why i give $ to NPR

so, the npr tells me two things today that are worthy of note

1.) Helen Mirren was not wearing underwear at the Oscars...is that what she meant when she said "I give you the queen"?
2.) the name of the military aircraft that shuttled VP Cheney around on his tour of asia and the middle east last week was, hand to god, The Spirit of Strom Thurmond. Al Sharpton could not be reached for comment.
