triumph of the jodie

about damn time someone did a film about riefenstahl...and with clarice starling at the helm, it could be fantastic. but then again, i even liked panic room...

Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster will play the leading role of Leni Riefenstahl in a work that is bound to generate immense argument, as it examines the beautiful woman who became Adolf Hitler's favourite director and whose slick propaganda helped the Nazi war machine...

I have to say, not much can rival Riefenstahl's own docu about herself, riddled, as it is, with inaccuracies, spin doctoring, and creative license. Methinks the director hated her. I'm intrigued about Jodie Foster's portrayal of her, and I'll definitely have to watch it.
For the record, I'm not sure how I feel about Reifenstahl, but it's hard for me to withhold at least a tiny smidge of respect for any woman who could control her own career and benefit herself in that time, especially in 1930s-40s Germany.
I don't really believe her caveat that she had no idea the evil that Hilter was capable of (egads! a preposition!), but there's something undeniably intriguing about the idea that Hilter's evil took everyone by surprise. Maybe it helps me believe in humanity's inherent goodness.
